By Form 5, you probably know Twelfth Night well enough to explain who loves whom, who is in disguise and how Malvolio gets fooled.

Then you face a Paper 2 essay question, and you freeze. Which scenes should you choose? What goes in the first paragraph? How do you explain dramatic irony without just retelling the story?

We’ll start with a complete answer to a real past-paper question. Then we’ll take it apart so you can see how to build your own.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

• work out what the question asks you to do, and give every part a place in your essay;

• write an opening that answers the question and a conclusion that brings your argument together;

• choose scenes you can explain, then develop your points without retelling the whole play;

• explain how dramatic irony works in a scene, instead of just naming the technique;

• recall useful quotations, place them in the play and explain what they show;

• outline and write an answer to a different question, then check where your explanation needs more work.
