How to Write About the Themes in Twelfth Night

Turn a topic like love into a sentence about what the play says, find the moments that prove it, and use the play’s background only where it helps your answer.

👋🏽 Hi, I’m Kerry. I teach CSEC English B at Arc School: live classes each week, lesson resources, exam practice and personalised coaching for your final exams. In this lesson, pay attention to how each theme sentence is built and the moments that prove it. Then write your own essay in your own words. Just don’t copy my sentences into your exam answer. Your answer has to show what you think.

Naming the themes of Twelfth Night takes a few seconds. Love, disguise, class. Saying what the play says about each one takes longer, and that is what your essay needs.

So today we’ll go through the themes one at a time, with the moments and lines that carry each one, and turn them into arguments.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • tell a topic from a theme

  • give the main themes of the play, each with moments and exact lines that prove it

  • use the play’s background in a sentence, only where it helps

  • turn a theme into the view your essay argues

In the full lesson, we take each main theme in turn, then the background that helps. Then you’ll plan an essay on a practice question.
